Come and explore a new destination and a different river and venture into the dense forest that is the Sebangau National Park, famous as a refuge for the largest remaining population of wild orangutans on Borneo. Following the boundary of the Park, the Katingan River, one of the longest in Central Kalimantan, we visit villages to experience traditional livelihoods and culture, explore mazes of black water lakes and finally venture into the forest and overnight in a comfortable lodge for your night wildlife walk.

Scheduled cruises start Saturdays and Tuesdays

Day 1     ORANGUTAN ISLAND – JAHANJANG – TALAGA

On arrival in Palangka Raya, we pick you up from the airport and in our air conditioned private charter car. From here we travel to Nyaru Menteng and board a simple local canoe to see the beautiful orangutan island, home to rehabilitated orangutans prior to their release into the wild. We watch from a distance that will not disturb this process as they adapt to the natural forest environment of the island. After return to land, we visit the Foundation’s Education Centre and have lunch in a favourite Dayak grill warung, before returning to the cars for a 2 hour drive to Jahanjang port on the Katingan River. Here we board the Spirit of Kalimantan for a welcome drink and snack as the boat heads down stream to the village of Telaga. Walk through the village and join some games with the villagers, and look at the local fishing home industry. The boat finds a quiet mooring for the night. (LD)

DAY 2             TELAGA, SUNGEI KLARU & SEBANGAU NATIONAL PARK

Cruising to the nearby River Klaru WE join some local canoes to explore this beautiful balck water lake system. Within RMU’s Katingan Mentaya Project forest rehabilitation area, we learn more about their REDD+ project as we quietly cruise upstream to a site to watch birds, proboscis monkeys and a variety of other wildlife. Enjoy the perfect reflections here.

Returning to the Spirit of Kalimantan, we cruise upstream to Punggu Alas River, where canoes are waiting to make the transfer into the National Park. On arrival at the WWF research and information site, we settle in to a private Lodge, accommodating 2 or max 3. Make yourself at home. We will have a short presentation on activities at the research centre and then we will stroll around the camp. After dinner, we set off on an exciting night wildlife spotting expedition – we’ll be looking for the clouded leopard and other nocturnal wildlife.

Accommodation is in a small jungle lodge. (BLD)
