Day 1 Tues PALANGKA RAYA – START CRUISE
Meet at Palangka Raya airport and transfer your boat in Palangka Raya harbour to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue upriver along the forest lined river, passing villages. In the early evening, take a canoe through the shimmering black water lakes. Keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and Brahmini kites. Return to the boat for a quiet dinner in the midst of the jungle. [B/L/D]
Day 2 Wed BAPALLAS ISLAND – TANGKILING
The boat moves up the Rungan River as you enjoy breakfast. On arrival to Bapallas Island, take a motorised canoe to observe orangutans.Leisurely lunch onboard while cruising to Kanarakan, a tiny riverside village on the Rungan River, passing Kaja Island, orangutan pre-release island for further sightings of orangutans. Arriving in the afternoon, the village elder, a DayakNgaju, gives a welcoming ceremony. We then stroll around the village with a local host to see the village home gardens, rubber field & rubber tapping demonstration, and other village livelihoods. Visit to the elder’s house and enjoy the traditional spices coffee while sharing stories. Back to the boat and cruise down to Lake Tahai. Overnight. [B/L/D]
Day 3 Thurs SEI GOHONG – KATIMPUN
Optional dawn canoeing to the lake for bird watching or climb to the top of Bukit Tangkiling. Visit the spirit houses around the sacred rock, Batu Banama. Leisurely breakfast on board. Visit the village of Sei Gohong to meet the traditional medicine expert then a short walk to the nearby forest to find several plants that are used as traditional medications by the Ngajus. Back to the village and see a larger collection of the traditional medicines and discuss their functions with the locals. Return to the boat for dinner and cruise downstream to Katimpun. Overnight in a quiet location on the river. [B/L/-]
Day 4 Fri KATIMPUN – PALANGKARAYA – BALIKPAPAN
Take a final stroll through the tiny local village of Katimpun and visit the reading project there. Return to the boat for the final cruise down stream to Palangakraya, enjoying lunch on the way. Visit the handicraft markets before transfer to the airport for flight to Balikpapan. Overnight hotel. Dinner is at own arrangement.
DAY 5 Sat BALIKPAPAN – TREE TOPS WALK – SAMBOJA LESTARI LODGE
You will pick up from your hotel for drive of approx. 3 hours to Samboja Lestari. On the way is the forest park of Bukit Bangkirai with its high canopy walk. Visitors can take short forest walks and climbing into the forest canopy using connecting bridges to a height of 40 meters. Platforms provide a perfect vantage point for observing macaques, leaf monkeys, maroon langurs, gibbons and hornbills. On arrival at Samboja Lestari check in to your beautiful room at the Lodge. Enjoy lunch at the terrace restaurant. In the afternoon to visit Sungai Hitam. Take a 30 minute drive from Samboja Lestari for a boat ride along the Sungai Hitam tidal river to see highly endangered Proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. Local fisherman will guide you on this tidal river, and gain a monthly income for their services. Dinner at the restaurant. [B/L/D]
DAY 6 Sun ORANGUTANS, SUN BEARS & SUNGEI WAIN
After breakfast, you will walks along the nearby Nature Trail follows a forest path 2 km in and out again from the Samboja Lodge (total 4 km). In order to ensure optimum wildlife viewing, the day begins at 7.30 am. There are a number of other animal species in Samboja Lestari that have returned to this regenerating forest. Some of the animals you might spot on guided walks early morning and late afternoon through our Nature Trail are: birds, lizards and snakes (blood pythons), small mammals (deer and pigs) and many amazing insects (walking sticks, beautiful butterflies, millipedes etc.). You might even spot wild primates newly arrived to the area such as gibbons, macaques (2 species), and proboscis and red leaf monkeys.
Do not forget to bring your camera to document wildlife observed and binoculars will be provided upon request at the front desk. Breakfast will be provided early begins at 6 am as the group will be returned to the Lodge at approximately 11.30 pm for lunch and after visiting orangutan island and sun bear sanctuary.
After lunch, visit the protected forest of Sungei Wain, less than one hours drive from Samboja Lestari. This was the first release site of BOS Foundation where 75 rehabilitated orangutans were released between 1992-1998. Several female orangutans with babies have been observed on previous visits. Since they are totally wild again, there is no 100% guarantee that you will see one of those released orangutans on this trip. But on this fairly challenging trip you will see much interesting wildlife.
Back to Samboja Lodge for dinner at the restaurant and overnight. [B/L/D]
Day 7 Mon SAMBOJA – MAHAKAM RIVER CRUISE
After breakfast, you will be picked up from Samboja Lodge for road transfer to Loa Janan, to board houseboat for exciting adventure on Mahakam river. Meals provided and overnight on houseboat. [B,L,D]
Day 8 Tues MUARA MUNTAI, MANCONG, TANJUNG ISUY, MUARA PAHU
Short sight seeing at Muara Muntai Wooden village, then crossing Jempang Lake by motor canoe to Mancong. During the cruise you could see Rain forest and wildlife at Ohong creek like monkey’s and birds, Upon arrival at Mancong, welcomed with a traditional ceremony by the Dayak Benuaq, one of the Oldest Dayak Longhouse of East Kalimantan can be found here, Late afternoon by motor canoe to Tanjung Isuy for sightseeing and continue to Houseboat for dinner and overnight. Houseboat will cruise downstream to Tenggarong. [B/L/D]
Day 9 Wed TENGGARONG – SAMARINDA
Arrive at Tenggarong, visiting the former palace of Sultan KutaiKertanegara. Where you will see the Sultan’s impressive collection of heirlooms, ceramics, Dayak’s art and culture items, until departure transfer to Samarinda hotel for overnight [B/L/-]
DAY 10, 11, 12, 13 Thurs Fri Sat Sun SAMARINDA – BERAU – MARATUA ISLAND RESORT
After breakfast transfer to the airport for short flight to Berau. On arrival, car transfer to the harbor (approx 2,5 hours) to board speedboat to cross the Sulawesi Sea to Maratua Island. Check in at the Resort.
Relax on this beautiful coral island and you have the option to enjoy snorkeling, or scuba diving (dives at different places over the 3 days – diving costs additional). Explore other islands in the archipelago by local boats (optional). Sangalaki for turtles and mantas, Kakaban for its remarkable jellyfish lake, and Maratua for its coral cave formations.
