Discover little known Indonesian Borneo. Observe orangutans, proboscis monkeys and magnificent hornbills along the jungle lined rivers while you taste the highlights of the local cuisine. Learn about the ingredients and how to prepare traditional fare. After the cruise, explore favorite, simple eateries and food in Palangkaraya as well as making a visit to the traditional wet markets. In a final adventure, journey to a distant longhouse for a nature walk to find jungle food and medicinal plants.
Day 1 ARRIVAL PALANGKARAYA – START CRUISE
Meet at Palangkaraya Airport and transfer to the Rahai’i Pangun in Palangkaraya harbor to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue upriver along the jungle lined river, passing villages and orangutan islands. In the early evening, take a canoe through the shimmering black water lakes. Keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, red langurs and Brahmini kites. Back to the boat for dinner
Rest and relax on board, enjoying the views. Get to know your tour companions and the guest cooks, and receive programs for cookery demonstrations, activities and excursions over the next 8 days.

Day 2 MARANG – KANARAKAN
The Rahai’i Pangun moves up the Rungan River, passing the orangutan release island of Pulau Kaja. During this leg of the cruise, cookery with some of the local river fish is demonstrated, and enjoyed over a convivial lunch.
Continuing on up river, we stop at a village and go for a walk with a local host to see how people live and work in these isolated communities. Taste the unique produce from the village, including special home grown coffee mixes and other fruits and foods in season.
Canoe ride in lakes and return to overnight near the village.

Day 3 KANARAKAN – TANGKILING – PALLAS ISLAND
Indonesian breakfasts are unique, and this morning we will teach a favorite breakfast dish. The boat makes its way down stream, again passing the orangutan island and making its way to Pallas Island.

Transfer by canoe to the BOS Orangutan Foundation’s Education Centre in Nyaru Menteng. Accompanied by experienced technicians, observe baby orangutans behind glass in the socialization cages and watch a film of BOS projects in Central Kalimantan.

Transfer by canoe to Tumbang Tahai, and later to Tangkiling Hill to see the village ‘patahu’ at the Sacred Batu Banama rock, and then to climb the hill for a view of the vast, flat flood plains and catch the sunset.
Return to the boat for dinner and quiet mooring on the river.

Day 4 TANGKILING – BUKIT RAWI
Today, relax and the enjoy the trip to Bukit Rawi, arriving mid afternoon. During this voyage, we will talk about the unique ‘bumbus’ used widely in Indonesian cookery. Watch as some are demonstrated for you, and later enjoy them for lunch.
On arrival in Bukit Rawi, walk through this historic town and visit a Dayak ancestral bone house, or ‘sandungs’, and the Tiwah or funeral ceremony. Ritual food on these occasions will be described.
Dinner on board, and later enjoy an evening of traditional entertainment.

Day 5 PALANGKARAYA – LONGHOUSE
The Rahai’i Pangun makes an early transfer to Palngkaraya.
Pack your bags and board cars to make a stop-over visit to the local wet markets. Under cover, these markets are a maze of stalls selling fresh foods and goods of all descriptions for kitchen and everyday use. See the live fish and fresh vegetable displays, colourful baskets and kitchen implements.
Transfer to cars and travel to Bukit Batu for a picnic lunch Dayak fish specialities. Arriving in the longhouse late afternoon, and make yourself at home in the simple twin rooms of the family longhouse. Stroll around to see the kitchen, meeting areas and music room.
Enjoy dance and music entertainment at night after dinner in the longhouse. Try the manasay dance or dress in traditional garb, made painstakingly in the longhouse.

DAY 6 JUNGLE NATURE WALK
Accompanied by longhouse elders, go for a walk in the jungle to find foods, fruits and medicinal plants (seasonal). Bring some back to cook for lunch. With basic ingredients bought from Palangkaraya, plan and cook a meal for the longhouse family in their simple kitchen. See if you can do it!

Day 7 LONGHOUSE - PALANGKARAYA
Early morning, tour to the nearby ‘sandungs’ or bone houses, outstandingly carved and painted, and learn about Dayak burial rituals. Mid morning departure after farewelling longhouse friends. Simple meal along the way.
Check in to your comfortable accommodation. Take a rest or a swim.

Day 8 CULTURAL TOUR – RESTAURANT
Today, a visit to the Museum is a fascinating finale to your Palangkaraya visit. Artifacts depict the Dayak life from birth to death. We move on to a locally renowned restaurant for a meal of Dayak specialties and a talk and demonstration.
Have the afternoon on the loose in the handicraft market. Have time to yourself for search through rattan woven baskets, beaded purses, jewelry, mats, semi precious stones and artifacts, and much more, as souvenirs of your visit.

Day 9 DEPARTURE
