7 Day Orangutan & Nature Tour in Tanjung Puting & Palangkaraya

Day 1   ARRIVAL PALANGKARAYA – START CRUISE  
Meet at Palangkaraya Airport and transfer to the Rahai’i Pangun in Palangkaraya harbour to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue along the forested river, passing villages. In the early evening, take a canoe through the shimmering black water lake and make a short stop and stroll around the Kalaweit island. Keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, hornbills and Brahmini kites. Return to the Rahai’i Pangun a quiet dinner in the midst of the forest. [L/D]  

Day 2    BAPALLAS ISLAND – KANARAKAN - TAHAI
The Rahai’i Pangun moves upstream along the Rungan River while you enjoy breakfast. On arrival at Bapallas Island, we will take the motorised canoe to observe orangutans to your first sighting of the magnificent orangutan.. Learn about the BOSF pre-release program as you watch orangutans in their natural habitat.  
Leisurely lunch onboard while cruising to Kanarakan, a tiny riverside village on the Rungan River. We pass Kaja pre-release orangutan island alond the route. Arriving in the village in the afternoon, village elders from the Dayak Ngaju tribe perform a welcoming ceremony before we stroll around the village. Joined by a local host, we see the village home gardens, rubber field & rubber tapping demonstration, and other village livelihoods. Visit the elder’s house and enjoy the traditional spices coffee or herbal tea while sharing stories.  
Back to the boat and cruise down to Lake Tahai. Overnight. [B/L/D] 
 
Day 3 TAHAI – SEI GOHONG – BAPALLAS & MUARA RUNGAN  
Optional dawn canoeing to the lake for bird watching.   
Leisurely breakfast on board.   
Visit the village of Sei Gohong to meet the traditional medicine expert then a short walk to the nearby forest to find several plants that are used as traditional medications by the Ngajus.  Back to the village and see a larger collection of the traditional medicines and discuss their functions with the locals.  
Back to the boat and cruise down stream to Muara Rungan passing Bapallas and island for more orangutan sightings.  
Overnight near Muara Rungan. [B/L/D]  

Day 4 TANGKILING – PANKALANBUN – KUMAI  - TANJUNG PUTING

Leave the boat early for air conditioned car transfer to sampit to pick up flight to Pangkalan Bun.
1300 approx time arrival in Kumai for transfer to the National Park by boat.
The boat is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat about 12m by 2m with a roof which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. The guide's team includes the boatman, a cook and expert guide. In the peaceful afternoon we will slowly explore the quite river by the klotok while observe the monkeys along the riverside. Dinner and overnight on the boat. simple mattress, pillow, fine meals, bottled "mineral" water, mosquito net, kitchen, simple toilet available on boat besides the familiar - helpful guides and boatmen.

Day 5 CAMP LEAKEY – BOAT/LODGE

After breakfast board the klotok to travel up river for about 2½ hours boating and then up a side creek to Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest and also known as research center for Orangutan. Trekking through tropical rainforest searching for wildlife, wild orangutan, birds and other primate as well as tropical jungle plant. Back to the boat for lunch then witness feeding time at 14.00 pm for old rehabilitation orangutan given additional foods.

Day 6 PONDOK TANGGUY – PESALAT – TANJUNG HARAPAN - BOAT/LODGE

After breakfast board the klotok to travel up the river for Pondok Tanguy, the rehabilitation center for the new ex-captive orangutans,see feeding time at 09.00am. Hike through the forest of Pondok Tanggui searching for wildlife including wild orangutan, birds and others. Afterward continuing the trip to Pesalat reforestation camp. See the process of reforestation project. Afternoon visit Tanjung Harapan Rehabilitation center to witness feeding time for rehabilitated orangutans at 15.00. Free afternoon program, we could visit village near by the park, enjoy canoeing around the river. (Additional program, night walking around Pesalat or Pondok Tanggui searching for nocturnal animal or blowing mushroom.)

Day 7 TANJUNG PUTING – KUMAI – DEPARTURE TO AIRPORT

Boat returns to Kumai. Taxi transfer to the airport
Tour ends.
