Tumbang Gagu Longhouse, AdventureTrek and Dayak Way of Life Tour

Day 1 PALANGKARAYA – TUMBANG MANGGU

Arrive in Palangkaraya and have lunch at the riverside Kampong Lauk Restaurant of barbequed local specialties. Sit in a little gazebo by the river and enjoy the passing river life. Travel to the port of Kasongan and beyond to the regional town of Tumbang Samba. At the junction of the Katingan and Samba Rivers, stop at the buzzing local market for fruit, before heading to Tumbang Manggu village. This is the site of new longhouse of traditional construction, developed as Dayak cultural centre by its owner, artist and Dayak elder, Bp Syaer Sua. Have a short rest, a quiet dinner and join the family for a night of Dayak entertainment.

Day 2 TUMBANG MANGGU – KATINGAN RIVER

Early morning start to explore the village and its Kaharingan Temple, traditional carvings and learn about the unique burial practices or the tewah. Departure for overland travel to Tumbang Hiran using available transport – this may be truck. Overnight in simple Dayak style tents en route.

Day 3 PENDATANGGARING BARU – TUMBANG GAGU

Again make an early start to find the boat or klotok to Pendatanggaring Baru, which will drop you to the trail to Tumbang Gagu. Walking along these trails, enter the village to see the magnificent, huge longhouse. This is the original home of Pak Syaer, an ancient longhouse on the upper reaches of the Katingan River. Still lived in by about 2 dozen families, you will be warmly welcomed to stay.

Day 4 TUMBANG GAGU

Explore this unique ancient longhouse and its surroundings. Overnight in the longhouse and share the lifestyle and stories of the traditional owners and inhabitants.

Day 5 TUMBANG GAGU – KATINGAN RIVER

Pack your bags and farewell your new friends. Begin your walk back to the Katingan River, camping or staying in simple accommodation along the way.

Day 6 RIAM MANGKIKIT - PALANGKARAYA

Today travel by canoe down the Katingan River to the Riam Mangkikit, or the Mangkikit rapids. This is a traditional Kaharingan holy place, where fascinating alters shelter under the trees and stories of giant crocodiles are told. Pick up by car to be transferred to Palangkaraya.

Basic accommodation and food are provided by longhouse owners. Including transfers from airport, all travel and accommodation as specified, food on trip. Excluding airfares to Central Kalimantan, optional extra tours , accommodation and food

NB Tours may take alternative routes depending on the season and other factors, as due to low water levels in some seasons, some upper river excursions may be made by road transport.
