Exploring the Tanjung Puting National Park

DAY 1 JAKARTA-PANGKALAN BUN – KUMAI – PARK

Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, you will be picked up by our local staff and taken to Kumai to board your private ‘klotok’ or motorized boat. This traditional wooden river boat is about 12m by 2m with an upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. The guide's team includes the boatman, a cook and expert guide. In the peaceful afternoon we will slowly explore the quiet river by the klotok to glimpse monkeys along the riverside. Check in to your comfortable room in the Rimba Lodge, adjacent to the Park.

DAY 2 PARK – CAMP LEAKEY – PONDOK TANGGUY

After breakfast board the klotok to cruise up the Sekonyer River for about 2½ hours entering a side creek to Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest. This is also a research center for orangutans. Take a short trek through the tropical rainforest searching for wildlife, birds, orangutans and other primates as well as jungle plants. Return to the boat for lunch and later see additional feeding time for older rehabilitated orangutans.

DAY 3 PARK – PONDOK TANGGUY – PESALAT – TJ HARAPAN

After breakfast board the klotok to travel up the river to Pondok Tanguy, rehabilitation center for recently released orangutans, and see feeding time at 09.00. Hike through the forest of Pondok Tanggui searching for wildlife including wild orangutans and birds. Return to the boat and continue to Pesalat reforestation camp to see reforestation project.

Afternoon, visit Tanjung Harapan Rehabilitation center to witness feeding time for 15.00. Return to the Lodge to rest or stroll on board walks around the Lodge.
Optional activity – night walking around Pesalat or Pondok Tanggui searching for nocturnal animals or blowing mushrooms.

DAY 4 PANKALANBUN - PALANGKARAYA

After breakfast, transfer to Kumai then to the airport. Make a short flight from Pangkalan Bun to Sampit, transferring on arrival to car for the road trip to Palangkaraya.

Orangutans and Dayak village life in Palangkaraya
Arriving Palangkaraya approx 3pm, transfer directly to the comfortable Rahai’i Pangun in the Tangkiling harbor. Boat passes Pulau Kaja, orangutan release island, and then continues upriver to the small riverside village of Kanarakan. The villagers welcome you with a traditional ceremony. As evening falls, stroll around this tiny hamlet, which has no road access, meeting the villagers.

DAY 5 ORANGUTANS – TANGKILING HILL

Early morning, the boat moves down river, passing the orangutan release island of Pulau Kaja. We stop at Tangkiling for an optional climb up Tangkiling Hill for a view of the surrounding plains.

After the climb, return to the boat and enjoy a relaxing cruise down river, passing Pulau Pallas, where you will see orangutans in the lush jungle on the island.

Transfer by canoe to the BOS Orangutan Foundation’s Education Centre in Nyaru Menteng.
Accompanied by experienced technicians, observe baby orangutans behind glass in the
socialization cages and watch a film of BOS projects in Central Kalimantan.
Cost : US$ 25 per person, donation to the BOS Orangutan Rehabiltiation Project

Before sunset, we take local canoes into the lake system to spot wildlife and local fishing activities, and marvel at the perfect reflections on the black waters.

DAY 6 BUKIT RAWI

Early morning, we continue to the Kahayan River, arriving at Bukit Rawi in mid afternoon. Walk through this historic town and learn about the Dayak ancestral bone houses, or Sandungs, and the Tiwah or funeral ceremony.

Dinner on board, and later enjoy an evening of traditional entertainment.

DAY 7 TRANSFER TO BANJARMASIN – SWIMMING BUFFALOES

Early morning cruise to Palangkaraya, enjoy breakfast on the way. Transfer to cars and make a short stop over in the handicraft market, before making the 3-4 hour overland trip to Banjarmasin.

Banjarmasin, Capital of South Kalimantan : see water buffaloes swimming, make a bamboo raft and finally visit this busy mercantile city’s floating market

Visit Pandak Daun swamp village for observing water buffaloes swim to their raised enclosures and villagers' unique activities as well as enjoying the romantic sunset outlook. Afterwards, proceed to Loksado for overnight in the lodge.

DAY 8 BAMBOO RAFTING

After breakfast, have an easy trek to a Dayak village to see a longhouse, rainforest, and a waterfall nearby. Next, we will take an adventure trip of bamboo rafting through a beautiful landscape of tropical rainforest along the riverside. The car will be waiting downstream for transfer to Banjarmasin.

DAY 9 FLOATING MARKET – BALIKPAPAN – TREE TOPS WALK

Very early morning, visit the floating market to see clusters of colourfully dressed Banjarese women trading their fresh garden produce from boat to boat on the Matapura River. Transfer to the airport. On arrival in Balikpapan transfer by car to the Hanging Bridge at Bukit Bangkirai, 40 meters high, over the beautiful forest tree tops. Later transfer to Samarinda for hotel check in and dinner.

DAY 10 BALIKPAPAN – KUTAI NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, drive to Kabo village in the Kutai National Park for cruise up to Mentoko by motorized canoe and then soft trekking in the jungle to observe wild orangutan. In the afternoon, we will trek other trails to look for orangutans and other wildlife. Lunch will be served en route, dinner at hotel.

DAY 11 JUNGLE TREK AND TRANSFER TO SAMARINDA

In the morning, we will cruise down the Mentoko River back to Kabo village for transfer to Samarinda to catch the flight to Berau at 15:30.

DAY 12 -13 DERAWAN DIVING ISLAND

Early morning transfer by speedboat to Nabucco Island Resort. Relax on this beautiful coral island and enjoy 6 dives at different places over the 2 days. Beach comb or snorkel or relax in the ambiance of this tiny coral island, all to yourself.

DAY 14 NABUCCO ISLAND - JAKARTA

Breakfast in the resort, before boarding speedboat for return to Berau for flight transfers to Jakarta
